In search for indirect criteria to improve feed utilization efficiency in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part II: Heritability of weight loss during feed deprivation and weight gain during re-feeding periods ArchiMer
Grima, Laure; Chatain, Beatrice; Ruelle, Francois; Vergnet, Alain; Launay, Amandine; Mambrini, Muriel; Vandeputte, Marc.
Selective breeding to improve residual feed intake (RFI) in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a major goal that would optimize economic gain while minimizing the environmental impact of production. Due to the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake, no selective breeding program has yet been started. In a previous study, we identified a criterion phenotypically related to RFI variations: the loss of weight during feed deprivation, FD. Moreover, an additional composite criterion (CC) integrating both FD and weight gain during subsequent re-feeding (RF) was closely related to RFI, even though the relationship was only close to significance (P=0.06). The aim of the present study was to estimate the heritability of these two traits, in order...

Inbreeding on productive and reproductive traits of dairy Gyr cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Reis Filho,João Cruz; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Raidan,Fernanda Santos Silva; Toral,Fabio Luiz Buranelo.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and to evaluate the effects of inbreeding on productive and reproductive traits of dairy Gyr cattle. Single-trait animal models were used to estimate genetic parameters and solutions for inbreeding coefficients for milk (milk 305-d), fat (fat 305-d), protein (protein 305-d), lactose (lactose 305-d), and total solids (TS 305-d) yield up to 305 days of lactation, days in milk (DIM), age at first calving (AFC) and calving intervals (CI). The mean inbreeding coefficient was 2.82%. The models with linear and quadratic effects of inbreeding coefficients fitted the data better than the models without or with only linear effect of inbreeding coefficient for all traits. The increase in inbreeding...

Incorporation of compound inflorescences and selection of high-yielding progenies in cowpea PAB
Bernardo,Karla Annielle da Silva; Freire Filho,Francisco Rodrigues; Ribeiro,Valdenir Queiroz; Vieira,Paulo Fernando de Melo Jorge; Lopes,Ângela Celis de Almeida; Oliveira,Rosana Mendes de Moura.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to obtain cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) progenies with compound inflorescences, short peduncles, early cycle, good plant architecture, and high-yielding potential. The initial genetic material consisted of 453 F2:3 progenies, selected from ten crosses and evaluated using Federer’s augmented block design, with two controls. Of these, 60 progenies from the F4:5 and F4:6 generations were selected and assessed in two consecutive experiments, both in a 8x8 lattice design with four controls and four replicates. Early selection was efficient at fixing the evaluated traits. A wide genetic variability was detected among and within progenies. The estimated and obtained heritability and genetic gains in the F4:5 and F4:6...

Inheritance of pinacle exsertion in rice Scientia Agricola
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Incomplete panicle exsertion is one of the symptoms of cold injury at the reproductive stage of the rice plant (Oryza sativa L.), which damages grain yield and raises disease incidence. For this reason, panicle exsertion is a better indicator of cold tolerance under field conditions than spikelet sterility, which may also be affected by other climatic factors. This work studies the variability of degree of panicle exsertion in rice, under the Southern Brazilian environmental conditions and determines the inheritance and heritability of this trait. Four rice genotypes of different cool temperature reactions at the reproductive stage were crossed and field evaluated, with the F2 generation, in relation to the degree of panicle exsertion and spikelet...

Inheritance of Seed Weight in Large-Seed Grass Pea Lathyrus sativus L Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Mera,Mario.
Mean seed weight (MSW) is a relevant trait in grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) commercialization because large grains are preferred in Western markets. Extending the knowledge on its mode of inheritance among large-seeded types would be useful in breeding programs, and therefore it was the objective of this work. A broad range of MSW is found in grass pea, starting at about 30 mg. Three lines (LS-97, LS-8, and LS-2026) within the large-seeded group but with significantly different MSW (179, 360 and 470 mg, respectively), were crossed in a complete diallel. Part of the F1 seed was sown and the remainder was stored. F1 plants from each cross were allowed to produce F2 seed and some were backcrossed to their respective parents. Parents, F1, F2, and backcross...

Interactive effects of genotype x environment on the live weight of GIFT Nile tilapias Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,SHEILA N. DE; RIBEIRO,RICARDO P.; OLIVEIRA,CARLOS A.L. DE; ALEXANDRE FILHO,LUIZ; OLIVEIRA,ALINE M.S.; LOPERA-BARRERO,NELSON M.; SANTANDER,VICTOR F.A.; SANTANA,RENAN A.C..
ABSTRACT In this paper, the existence of a genotype x environment interaction for the average daily weight in GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in different regions in the state of Paraná (Brazil) was analyzed. The heritability results were high in the uni-characteristic analysis: 0.71, 0.72 and 0.67 for the cities of Palotina (PL), Floriano (FL) and Diamond North (DN), respectively. Genetic correlations estimated in bivariate analyzes were weak with values between 0.12 for PL-FL, 0.06 for PL and 0.23 for DN-FL-DN. The Spearman correlation values were low, which indicated a change in ranking in the selection of animals in different environments in the study. There was heterogeneity in the phenotypic variance among the three regions and...

Investigation of morphological predictors of fillet and carcass yield in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) for application in selective breeding ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Puledda, Antonio; Tyran, Anne Sophie; Bestin, Anastasia; Coulombet, Celine; Bajek, Aline; Baldit, Gwenaelle; Vergnet, Alain; Allal, Francois; Bugeon, Jerome; Haffray, Pierrick.
Genetic parameters for carcass and fillet percentage were estimated in 760 European sea bass reared under commercial conditions and slaughtered at 573 days post fertilization (395 g mean body weight). Phenotyped fish were the offspring of 45 sires and 20 dams crossed in a factorial mating design. Pedigrees were re-constructed with 90.7% success using 12 microsatellites. The heritability of fillet yield was moderately low (0.21), while it was high for carcass yield (0.57). Both traits were poorly correlated (− 0.01 to 0.28) making space for their combined improvement. We investigated different predictors derived from measurement of surfaces on digital pictures and ultrasound measurements at several points of the body. The accuracy of the phenotypic...

Minimizing maternal effect in salmonid families mixed since eyed stages and a posteriori DNA-pedigreed ArchiMer
Haffray, Pierrick; Vandeputte, Marc; Petit, V.; Pincent, Cedric; Chatain, Beatrice; Chapuis, H.; Meriaux, J. C.; Coudurier, B.; Quillet, E.; Dupont-nivet, M..
Application of DNA parentage assignment for commercial selection in aquaculture is still rare. An experiment was performed to quantify and to minimize maternal effects on growth in rainbow trout. Six hundred families were reared until 198 day post fertilization (dpf) according to two different procedures. In the first procedure (NORM), all families were pooled at eyed stage. In the second procedure (MIN), where maternal effects due to differences in egg size were expected to be minimal, the spawns were divided into sub-groups with similar mean egg weight at eyed stage. These sub-groups were then pooled when they achieved the same mean body length (147 dpf). Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight, body length and condition factor at 198 dpf, with...

Modeling of average growth curve in Santa Ines sheep using random regression models R. Bras. Zootec.
Sarmento,José Lindenberg Rocha; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Sousa,Wandrick Hauss de; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Lôbo,Raimundo Nonato Braga; Sousa,José Ernandes Rufino de.
Polynomial functions of age of different orders were evaluated in the modeling of the average growth trajectory in Santa Ines sheep in random regression models. Initially, the analyses were performed not considering the animal effect. Subsequently, the random regression analyses were performed including the random effects of the animal and its mother (genetic and permanent environment). The linear fit was lower, and the other orders were similar until near 100 days of age. The cubic function provided the closest fit of the observed averages, mainly at the end of the curve. Orders superior to this one tended to present incoherent behavior with the observed weights. The estimated direct heritabilities, considering the linear fit, were higher to those...

Dias,Nilma O; Rebouças,Tiyoko NH; São José,Abel R; Amaral,Cláudio LF.
ABSTRACT Originally from tropical America, annatto is an important source of natural dyes for food, pharmaceutical and textile industries, especially for the increasing demand of this pigment substituting artificial dyes. The aim of this study was to evaluate genotypic variation of annatto cultivar Embrapa 37, aiming to generate subsidies for breeding programs as well as to help out the producers using vegetative propagation of superior genotypes. Therefore, the morphological characterization was carried out and estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters, for production and quality of the fruits, were obtained. The results showed wide rate of genetic variability among the plants with low environmental influence on the phenotype for traits bixin...

Morphological genetic markers for selection of broiler lines Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Schmidt,GS; Coutinho,LL; Figueiredo,EAP de; Ledur,MC; Alves,HJ.
Two paternal broiler lines (LL and LLc, originated from the same stock in 1998) of Embrapa Suinos e Aves genetic program were used. Line LL had been selected for eight generations for rapid growth while LLc had been mated randomly, without selection, as a control line. In the last generation, 30 males and 240 females were used in hierarchical matings with pedigree control to determine sire effect. The same number of birds were used, but matings were at random for LLc. Eggs of both lines were incubated and embryos were collected in different development stages (40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 hours after setting) in order to determine somite number (NOS). The number of evaluated embryos were 1,967 and 498 for LL and LLc, respectively. This study aimed to determine...

Multi-Trait analysis of growth traits: fitting reduced rank models using principal components for Simmental beef cattle Ciência Rural
Mota,Rodrigo Reis; Costa,Edson Vinícius; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Nascimento,Moyses; Silva,Luciano Pinheiro da; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Marques,Luiz Fernando Aarão.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the dimensional reduction of additive direct genetic covariance matrices in genetic evaluations of growth traits (range 100-730 days) in Simmental cattle using principal components, as well as to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters. Principal component analyses were conducted for five different models-one full and four reduced-rank models. Models were compared using Akaike information (AIC) and Bayesian information (BIC) criteria. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The AIC and BIC values were similar among models. This indicated that parsimonious models could be used in genetic evaluations in Simmental cattle. The first...

Natural selection and family X location interaction in the common (dry) bean plant Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pirola,Luís Henrique; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Carneiro,José Eustáquio S.; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa.
Natural selection takes place while advancing generations of segregant populations of self pollinating species by the population (bulk) method. There is evidence that it maintains the individuals with greater grain yield. The question arises whether natural selection preserves the individuals which are more adapted only to the environment where the generation advance occurred, that is, if it contributes to increasing the genotype x environment interaction in the family assessment. This study was carried out to check this hypothesis in the common bean plant using families derived from a segregating population from a cross between the Carioca MG x ESAL 686 cultivars. The segregating populations increase in homozygosity was obtained by the population (bulk)...

Partitioning genetic effects due to embryo, cytoplasm and maternal parent for oil content in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wu,Jian-Guo; Shi,Chun-Hai; Zhang,Hai-Zhen.
Analysis of genetic main effects and genotype x environment (GE) interaction effects on the oil content of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was conducted by using a genetic model for the quantitative traits of seeds in diploid plants. The experiments were carried out over two years with 8 parents and a diallel mating design, which produced F1 and F2 generations. We found that the oil content of rape was simultaneously controlled by embryo genetic effect, cytoplasmic effects and maternal genetic effect as well as GE interaction effects, with the cytoplasmic and maternal effects playing the main role. The results indicate that selection of maternal plants for high oil content would be more efficient than selection based on single seeds. Since the GE...

Phenotypic recurrent selection in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) with carioca-type grains for resistance to the fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola Genet. Mol. Biol.
Amaro,Geovani Bernardo; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Silva,Flávia Barbosa.
The efficiency of recurrent selection was assessed in obtaining common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) plant lines resistant to the phytopathogenic fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola. The base bean population was obtained from the partial diallel between seven lines with carioca-type grains and 10 sources of resistance to P. griseola. The plants most resistant to the pathogen were selected in the F2 (S0) generation of the populations (C-0). The best S0:1 plants that presented carioca-type grains were intercrossed to obtain cycle I (C-I). The same procedure was adopted to obtain cycles C-II to C-V. In each recurrent selection cycle, S0:1 progenies selected were also assessed in experiments carried out in Lavras, Brazil, always using as check the Carioca MG...
